| Academic Training Programs The Institute has developed several programs designed for students and academic staff from Haitian universities as well as underprivileged youth wishing to prepare themselves for college. 1. Thesis Advisory Support Program (PAM) These programs represent the preliminary stage for raising the level of the student population in Haiti to match the international standards of university training with the aim of gradually training a critical mass of students as researchers and innovators. Thesis Advisory Support Program (PAM) In partnership with Haitian universities, PAM will allow students from any area interested in the Institute’s main themes to access its research infrastructure and network of professional researchers, with the intention of helping them produce their end of course dissertation. These students will be invited to participate in the Research Training Course modules designed to prepare them for the demands of the M.A. and Ph.D. courses. Research Training Course (CIR) The Research Training Course is intended for college students at the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree level. It lasts two years and comprises a set of theoretical and practical modules through which students are trained in the main research activities: building research topics, formulating qualitative and quantitative studies, ethnographic and environmental observation, elaborating and conducting interviews, statistical methods and analyses, archival research and critical reading of texts. The course modules are accompanied by practical exercises linked to the research being conducted in the various laboratories. Faculty Support Program (PPAP) The Institute offers Haitian university academic staff a stimulating space in which they can develop their research and teaching projects. INURED proposes to serve as a platform for group discussions and exchanges during which faculty have the chance to discuss their work with peers and take part in workshops and continuous training modules on theoretical and methodological issues. The Program also aims to prepare academic staff to join INURED’s M.A. and Ph.D. teaching program. Pre-university Remedial Program (PRPU) The pre-university remedial program is aimed at students from very disadvantaged social backgrounds who are seeking to enter college. Its aim is to prepare them for the entrance examinations required by Haitian and foreign universities associated with INURED by offering them courses in methods, comprehension and critical analysis of texts, as well as practical exercises in writing.
Faculty Activities Special Courses/ Spring and Fall breaks The Institute offers Special Course modules lasting from one week to one month in collaboration with the University of Miami, Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University and FLACSO in the Dominican Republic. The themes tackled vary each year but are primarily focused on the Environment, Health and Bilateral Initiatives between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The July 2009 course will be centered on the issue of health in Haiti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, and will be targeted at Haitian, Cuban, Dominican and American students at the M.A. and Doctoral levels. Visiting Researchers Each year the Institute welcomes visiting Haitian and foreign academic staff and researchers for a period spanning from one week to one month. The Institute also offers visitor programs lasting for up to one year, on the condition that the Institute, along with the laboratory or laboratories to which the academic staff and researchers are affiliated, have developed appropriate mechanisms to this effect. The number of visiting academics per year depends on the availability of resources, demand, and the objectives to be met. The Institute has two entry regimes for visiting researchers: those who receive 50% of their funding from the Institute and those who receive 100% from the researcher’s own or another institution. |
